With deep love and heartfelt remembrance, we announce the passing of our Dad, John F. “Hoppy” McGlynn, Sr. on February 20, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones at the GCMC, Scranton, PA.

Born in Avoca, July 13, 1936, he was the son of the late Thomas and Mary (Marley) McGlynn. He graduated from Duryea High School. He retired from the Luzerne County Housing Authority. He was a member of Nativity of Our Lord Parish, Duryea. Hoppy was a member of the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick, Ancient Order of Hibernians and a lifetime member of the West Side Social Club. Through these organizations, he celebrated his Irish heritage, built lasting friendships, and remained deeply rooted to his community.
Family members will always remember Hoppy as the loving patriarch who put his family above all else. His big heart was always ready to help both family and friends. Hoppy’s love for music was unforgettable—he was the life of every party with his singing and laughter, especially when performing Irish songs. When he sang Daddy’s Little Girl to his daughters, those moments were truly special.
In addition to his beloved wife of 51 years Mercedes Gillis McGlynn, Hoppy was preceded in death by his daughter Colleen McAndrew, son John F. “Skip” McGlynn, Jr., brothers Thomas, Martin, and Leo, sisters-in-law, Anna Rita McGlynn, Rosemarie McGlynn, Marie Gogel, Patricia Gillis, and brothers-in-law, John (Doc) Blanchard, Phil Gogel, and Robert Gillis.
He is survived by his children; Nadine McGlynn, Michael McGlynn, Sr. and wife Rainey, and Meredith McGlynn. Grandchildren Lindsay Filipkowski (Joseph), Krista Pisano (Steve), Danielle Gannon (Sean), John McGlynn III, Michael McGlynn, Jr., and Matthew McGlynn, Sr., sister Mary Blanchard and sister-in-law, Patricia McGlynn. Also surviving are his nine great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
