Born March 23, 1938, Joe passed away peacefully at age 87, under the compassionate care of Allied Services Hospice Center in Scranton on Tuesday morning. His wife is the former Josephine Lombardo whom they celebrated 68 years together including celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary this past November.

Joe was a graduate of Pittston High School and was a star football player, having been recruited by multiple college football programs including University of Miami.
However, family and business became two focal points that he started young and carried throughout his life.
Joe had an amazingly successful career in the fine clothing and garment industry as many local, affluent women completely relied on his business for their clothing and finest garments and dresses for many years.
Joe, also known as Detroit Joe by many, lived a very fulfilled and colorful life. He was a loyal friend to many. Joe loved and celebrated life whether it was regular card games or dining with friends, or attending regular gatherings at the Breakfast Club or tending to his garden. Detroit Joe was and will always be a legend. He also truly enjoyed celebrating his Italian heritage, primarily through family gatherings over the years and the wonderful hospitality and culinary skills of his wife Josephine which was always at the table. Everyone knows he had to add his Sicilian touch to all cuisine.
Joseph was predeceased by his parents Ross and Rose DelRegno Sciandra, his brothers James, Anthony, Ross, Charles, sister-in-law Marie Lombardo Brogna, and his eldest son Jody who passed away suddenly in 2023.
In addition to his beloved and caring wife, Joe is survived by his daughter Stephanie, son Michael and wife Amanda and Georgie the beagle mix, as well as his dear grandson Albert Joseph (A.J.) whom he proudly helped to raise. Joe is also survived by siblings Rosemary Porzucek and Ann Marie Sciandra, brother-in-law Frank Cheech Brogna and sister-in-law Rose Marie Sciandra, and many precious nieces and nephews.
The family would like to share their gratitude for niece and longtime medical advocate Dr. Lucyanne Sciandra, Allied Services Home Health and Allied Services Hospice Center who helped to support Joe in so many ways through his health issues. Special gratitude from the family for nieces Lisa (Lombardo) Alves and Michelle (Lombardo) Albolino, godson/nephew Jimmy Brogna and wife Laura, Carol and Kim Pace, all for their constant support, especially during these past few months.
A mass celebrating his life will be held at St. Joseph Marello Parish on Saturday morning at 9:30AM under the coordination of Adonizio Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 8:30 until time of mass.
In lieu of flowers, friends and family are asked to make a contribution to the Allied Services Hospice Center so they may continue their mission of the highest quality comfort care for others, as was provided for our dear husband, father, grandfather, uncle and beloved friend to many.
