Charlotte “Shirley” Karuzie

Charlotte “Shirley” Karuzie, of Avoca, passed away on Saturday August 16, 2025, at Geisinger CMC Hospital, Scranton.  Born in Duryea, she was the daughter of the late Chester and Mary (Galushka) Levandowski.

Shirley was a lifelong member of SS Peter and Paul/ Queen of the Apostles Parish Church in Avoca and a proud graduate of Duryea High School.


 She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years Anthony “Tony” Karuzie, who passed away on March 24, 2013. She was also preceded in death by her siblings: Joseph, Edward, Bertha, Anne, Stella, Helen, Mary, Tessie, Chester, Adam, and John.


She is survived by her sister, Sophie Burke, of Scranton; her sister-in-law, Evelyn Levandowski; her brother-in-law, Robert Karuzie; as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews who will deeply miss her.


The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the administration, nurses, staff, and residents of Oakwood Terrace Nursing and Care center in Moosic for the compassionate care, kindness and friendships they shared with Shirley during her stay.


A mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 11:00am at Queen Of The Apostles Parish Church, 715 Hawthorne St., Avoca.  Friends may call for visitation on Thursday morning from 9:30am to 10:30am at Kiesinger Funeral Services 255 McAlpine St. Duryea. 


Interment will follow in SS Peter and Paul Cemetery, Avoca.
