Lois (Heckman) Pierce

Lois (Heckman) Pierce, 91, a lifelong resident of Hughestown, passed away on Monday, August 31, 2026, at Allied Services Skilled Nursing, Wilkes-Barre. She was born in Hughestown on July 25, 1935, and was the daughter of the late George and Esther (Carichner) Heckman.


Lois was a very active member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, where she served as superintendent of the  Sunday School, participated in the Women’s Group of St. Peter’s, and was a member of the church board. She was a graduate of Hughestown High School and the McCann School of Business.


She worked briefly in the local garment industry and retired after many years of employment with the William C. Gelb Accounting Agency, Pittston. Lois was also very involved in the Hughestown community. She was a member of the Hughestown Hose Company Women’s Auxiliary and an organizer of the Hughestown High School Reunion Committee. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Pierce, who died on June 12, 1991, and by her brothers, Arlan and Gary Heckman.


She is survived by her daughters, Marion McNulty of Plains and Renee Merkel of the state of Washington. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Mark McNulty and his wife, Mary; Megan Heffron and her husband, Matthew; Brandon Merkel; Christopher Merkel and his wife, Jasmin; and Cassandra and Jessica Merkel; her great-grandchildren, Maxwell, Margaret, and Martha McNulty, Mason and Michael Heffron, Eren Merkel, and Ellerie Merkel; and her nephew.


A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 100 Rock St., Hughestown, with Pastor Justin Tigerman officiating. Friends may call for visitation at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be held at the Cemetery of the German People, Hughestown.
