In Loving Memory of Theresa Janes

Theresa Janes, 89, forever 39, of Taylor and Suscon, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2026 at Oak Ridge Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Taylor.

Born in Moosic on September 15, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Mary (Allen) Exter. Theresa was a member of Queen of the Apostles Parish in Avoca and a graduate of South Scranton High School. Before retiring, she worked for many years at Topps Chewing Gum in Duryea.

Theresa was a lover of life who brought warmth, laughter, and friendship to those around her. She was an avid poetry writer and enjoyed being a social member of her community. Theresa was a social member of the South Side Senior Center and the VFW in Dupont, where she enjoyed the companionship and friendships she made along the way. Her love of family, her wonderful sense of humor, and her zest for life will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, Theresa was preceded in death by her siblings, Celestine Popple, Allen “Echer” Exeter, Stanley Exeter, Ceil Exter, Ann Joy Markowski, John T. “Chick Boone,” Mary George, and Gloria Kostiak.

She is survived by her loving son, Stanley Zurek and his wife, Lisa, of Suscon; her daughter, Marianne Ascani and her husband, Joseph, of Florida; grandson, Joshua Zurek; granddaughter, Haleigh Swales; great-grandson, John; and great-granddaughter, Aria. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, who will cherish her memory.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone at Oak Ridge Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center for the kindness, compassion, and care given to Theresa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday September 26, 2026 at 9:30 am at St. Mary’s Church (Queen of the Apostles Parish), 715 Hawthorne St. Avoca, with Fr. Thomas Petro Officiating. Interment to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Avoca.
